When the first batch of Panthers left the factory they were painted Dunkelgrau dark grey. In February 1943 all factories were instructed to paint all German armoured fighting vehicles Dunkelgelb, a dark sandy yellow. Each individual Panzer unit then applied its own individual camouflage pattern. Dip the sponge in a little paint, wipe off the excess, then dab on the chips carefully. A torn piece of blister sponge works well for fairly heavy chipping, while make-up sponge will give a finer effect, suitable for tiny chips on small-scale miniatures. Use a brush to pick out areas of especially heavy wear.
Late war camo is olive base with other colors applied over the olive, with a tight edge between the colors. The barrel would be painted. If the barrel had been replaced it probably would not be in primer. It might just be a solid olive. The paint job would be in good shape because it was only a couple of months old.
Military camouflage is the use of camouflage by an armed force to protect personnel and equipment from observation by enemy forces. Hobby Master plans to offer two M60A1 Patton tanks that make use of this camouflage scheme (HG5604 and HG5605), one set in the late 70s with the US Army and the other set in the Step 1: Spray primer. As the heading says, I sprayed my miniatures with Army Painter ‘Desert Yellow’. This spray is rather thick compared to the rest of the range, so be careful to use short sweeping bursts. This spray will be the primer and one of the main colours in one step, so saves you a lot of time. I added polly-filla and small rocks Sirte does have an airfield, so who knows. Some have suggested possible Italian paints were used, but they too did not officially have a desert sand paint for their army until a decision was made on the 18th, a day after a choice was made for the Afrikakorps.
